Breaking through the shell. Auspicious.

Breaking through the shell.

Why does the text say “Breaking through the shell”? In transformed L5, Gen at line three, four, five is overlaid with Xun above. Xun represents submit and yield, while Gen represents the eggshell that covers the embryo, which is the obstacles. This shows that the Gen side gives in and the covering shell breaks. As for the Zhen-Li image in Hidden L5, it can be interpreted in two ways. No. 1, Li represents the eggshell and Zhen represents breaking down, Zhen-Li together indicates the eggshell breaks down. No.2, Li represents the eye, light, manifestation, and overcoming covering; Zhen represents gaining the upper hand. Then Zhen-Li together indicates the manifestation energy gains the upper hand. Either way, we can conclude this scenario refers to a successful hatching.

Auspicious.

Why does the text say “auspicious”? “Auspicious” means that a favorable change appears in the external environment for our side: a good thing that may or may not happen has in fact happened. Gen represents the shell and the obstacle, while Xun represents to yield. This shows that the obstacle side gives way to the Zhen side. For the focal player, this means the obstacle gives in, allowing the focal player to proceed with minimal effort. Therefore, the text says “auspicious.”

From the perspective of the natural physiology of avian incubation, when the embryo is fully developed, the outer shell of the egg becomes weaker and may even crack on its own. This phenomenon is also consistent with our hexagram interpretation here.

The fifth line occupies a balanced and proper position, and it is often the line of success and victory building on earlier lessons. In this line, the chick finally breaks through the shell, and the incubation finally reaches its success.
