LÜ Line 6
Transformed L6
䷹
Hidden L6
Gen
Dui
䷳
Examine the parasite, deliberate on its guilt, and imprison it. Auspicious for the leader.
Examine the parasite
“Examine the parasite” clarifies who inflicts the harm and who suffers it. In Transformed L6, upper Qian becomes Dui, which can mean damage. Does this mean that the other player is damaged, or that the other player damages the focal player? The statement identifies the parasite as the party being examined.
The two Dui connect through Li in lines two, three, and four. Li represents eyes and examination. Qian, the other player whose energy has been consumed, now examines and punishes the parasite. Upper Dui therefore means damage inflicted by the other player on the focal player.
Deliberate on its guilt and imprison it
What is the function of the phrase “deliberate on its guilt, and imprison it”? Because Dui represents the focal player’s energy, an inexperienced interpreter might assume that Qian becoming Dui gives the focal player more support. Doubled Dui might then seem favorable for the focal player. The statement clarifies the outcome: the parasite faces judgment and imprisonment. In Transformed L6, upper Dui diminishes lower Dui. In Hidden L6, doubled Gen means obstacles brought by the Gen side to the focal player prevail. These are punishment and confinement, rather than support for its activity.
Why does the text say, “deliberate on its guilt”? Dui represents words and speech. Upright and inverted Dui in lines three through six suggest repeated discussion and questioning back and forth. Xun in lines three, four, and five represents a charge or culpability. Together, these images depict an examination of the parasite’s conduct and a judgment of its guilt.
Why does the text say, “imprison it”? Hidden L6 is doubled Gen, depicting the result of the deliberation. Gen represents obstacles and the Gen side, and doubled Gen means that obstruction from the Gen side prevails. Upper Gen represents a prison above Zhen in lines three, four, and five, the focal player’s mobility. Lower Gen represents government. The government establishes a prison and confines the focal player.
Auspicious for the leader
Why does the text say, “auspicious for the leader”? The sentence clarifies who benefits from the final outcome. Transformed L6 is doubled Dui. Lower Dui represents the damage to Qian; upper Dui restrains and diminishes it. The ruler removes the parasite and stops losing energy. Hidden L6 is doubled Gen. Lower Gen represents the body or government, while upper Gen represents safety: security is restored. Gen and Qian share interests, so strengthening Gen also benefits Qian. The outcome is therefore auspicious for the leader.
The sixth line often gives both an ending and a reversal of the plot. For the ending, judgment and imprisonment complete the parasite’s story. As for the reversal, in the first five lines, the parasite remains active; in the sixth, prison removes its freedom. Previously, it harms the other player; now, the other player punishes it. Previously Gen did nothing and served as the parasite's foothold; now Gen represents the authority that confines it. The direction of harm is reversed.
